Cara Maiden of Polkadot Teapot claimed the top award at Cake International which saw more than 1,300 cakes on display in Birmingham’s NEC.

IMG 3454The world-wide competition attracts cake decorators from around the globe with Cara’s outstanding wedding cake overwhelming the expert celebrity judges.

“I am absolutely overjoyed to be placed first in the wedding cake decorating category and very appreciative of all the kind comments for the design”, she explained.

“When my name was called as the winner I simply couldn’t believe it. I think I’m still in shock.”

The former child psychiatric consultant began cake decorating just eight years ago as a method of stress-relief from her demanding and challenging role as a paediatrician in Bristol Hospital.

She followed a lifelong ambition with her friend Ann Washington to open a vintage tea room and cake decorating business in Llantrisant old town last year.

But when Cara recently suffered a fractured foot while training for the Cardiff half-marathon, she turned her attentions to the Cake International competition and began planning her internationally award-winning design.

The black five-tier design with seeds mosaics, flowers and foliage all delicately hand-made in sugar was created from the Indian proverb, ‘All the flowers of all the tomorrows are in the seeds of today.’

Her design beat off 235 other competitors in the Wedding Cake Decoration category to claim the coveted first prize.

Cara also received a gold award for her Roald Dahl inspired cake in the Novelty category and received a silver award for the Beatrix Potter cake in the Celebration category.

“This means a lot to me personally and I’m delighted to be bringing the title back to Llantrisant,” she added.

“I derive so much pleasure from decorating cakes on a daily basis, but to be recognised for those designs is incredible”.

Polkadot Teapot offers a cake decorating arm to the business with bespoke celebratory and novelty cakes which are made to order. They also have different workshops for people to try their hand at making their own designs.
